Red Shouldered Hawk Pair Seen Today

Mar 28, 2017 | Birds, Bob Dyer, Ellis Creek | 0 comments

From Bob Dyer:
I saw a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks on a eucalyptus tree at Ellis Creek today. There is an old nest there that several breeding pairs have used before.

Are they friends or lovers?  The one at left is probably female as they are larger than the male, suggesting the one on the right is male. To me they look like first-year birds. When the male departed  the female was calling for him within several minutes. I have yet to see any activity at the old nest, which can best be viewed from the water control platform for Pond B. The second photo is of a pair that nested in the tree in 2011, male below. Is one of these red shouldered hawks the juvenile we have seen near the entrance to Shollenberger Park?
