We’re thrilled to share our newest interactive feature on the website: the Bird Survey Explorer.
For years, the Petaluma Wetlands Alliance has tracked bird life across our two premier wetlands — Shollenberger Park since 2004 and the Ellis Creek Water Recycling Facility since 2010. That’s a rich history of data on different species, seasonal changes, and the health of our bird populations. Now, all of this valuable information is just a click away.
Here’s what you can do:
- Filter by date and location — explore the full survey history, focus on the last 5 or 10 years, or set your own custom range. You can also narrow results to Ellis Creek, Shollenberger, or both.
- See the big picture — instantly view totals for birds counted, species observed, survey events, and the years covered.
- Discover the trends — interactive charts show birds counted by year, species richness over time, and the most frequently observed species.
- Dig into individual species — search and browse the Species Explorer in table or gallery view, complete with photos and detailed survey profiles for each bird.
- Take the data with you — export any filtered view as a CSV file for your personal research or records.
Whether you’re a curious visitor, an avid birder tracking your favorite species, or a researcher interested in wetland health, the Bird Survey Explorer makes understanding two decades of citizen science both simple and visually engaging.
